Definition of
European Union
organization of European nations a social, economic, and political organization involving 27 European countries. It came into effect in 1993 as a result of the signing of the Maastricht Treaty by 15 countries; other countries joined later. Precursors were the European Community (EC) and the European Economic Community (EEC).
